HIPERPIGMENTATION...

Hyperpigmentation is uneven, dark patches on the skin, mainly caused by sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation usually occurs when there is an strong inflammatory process. It is a change in skin colour that is darker than other areas of the skin. It is not permanent but can persist for quite a long time, sometimes months or even years, especially under sun exposure.

Another type of hyperpigmentation, called melasma, can occur due to environmental stress factors such as sleep deprivation, hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause. Also in the case of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, trauma to the skin caused by, for example, cystic acne, can cause discolouration.

How to prevent it?

The best way to prevent hyperpigmentation is to avoid irritation or inflammation. Therefore, if you are prone to acne, it is best to make sure you are taking the appropriate treatment. Kristīne Liepiņa recommends the LED red light device. "The device, in combination with a stable acne regime, is great for reducing inflammation and redness," says Kristīne.

The best way is the most obvious - apply sun protection cream (SPF) before going outdoors, even on a cloudy day. Christine recommends repeating this every few hours with SPF 15 or 30 to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. If it's a sunny day or you plan to be outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat and don't forget to apply SPF to your ears and neck. Wear protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses and try to limit the amount of time you spend in the sun.

How to treat existing damage?

If you already have hyperpigmentation, the lesions can be treated after they have already occurred. Sun protection and sunscreen help prevent pigmentation from darkening further, and avoiding the sun can help prevent pigmentation more quickly.

Products rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A, C or E can help repair damaged skin cells and even out skin tone. Christine's advice is to choose the product that best suits your skin type and make sure it is clinically proven to be effective. Although it is possible to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, it can be difficult to completely eliminate spots.
