All about ... PORES

There are several factors that can cause this unsightly skin problem, including the accumulation of dead skin cells, excess sebum, improper cleansing and hormones.

"Dead skin": When dead skin cells accumulate on the epidermis (the top layer of the skin), they can block the pores. To prevent the pores from becoming blocked, it is important to keep the skin cleansed and to exfoliate gently. The sebaceous glands produce the skin's natural oils, known as sebum. Although sebum helps to keep the skin soft and smooth, sebaceous glands can become overactive and produce too much sebum, leading to open/closed blemishes. Using products containing salicylic acid can help as salicylic acid is soluble in oil (sebum) and can penetrate deeper into the pores to cleanse the skin and pores.

Improper cleansing: Using inappropriate products can also clog pores and cause comedones. Even exfoliation, often touted as the best way to cleanse pores, can exacerbate the problem if done too often or too aggressively. Excessive scrubbing can irritate and dry the skin or cause sebum to be released to compensate.

Hormones: hormonal changes due to puberty or pregnancy can increase your skin's sebum production and cause clogging of the pores.
